I grew up working in the church. From working in the youth auxiliary, choir, usherboard, women's ministry, and even the culinary committee; It was always something I enjoyed. On Sundays and some week nights, we went to "service"; Sunday morning service, Sunday night service, missionary service, and youth service; these were all standard services that I attended growing up. While I enjoyed attending these services, it wasn't until I truly developed an appetite for Kingdom work that I realized my definition of service had been limited to what was done inside the four walls of my local church. As I studied the ministry of Jesus Christ and his apostles, I found a more meaningful definition of the word "service." Service is something we do for others. It involves putting others first and providing for those who are in need. Matthew 19:21 (NIV) says, "Jesus answered, If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." Jesus himself “did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, even though He was the very nature of God.” Jesus took on the nature of a servant when he fed multitudes and displayed humility when he washed his disciples' feet. There are many other scriptures that support the fact that Jesus intends for his followers to follow His example of servanthood.

True service involves going outside of the church building and serving others. There are so many people who are in need in our communities. We have an opportunity and responsibility to bring hope and healing to those who are lost and in despair. So let's be like Jesus and offer our service to others today!
